The pirate crew are a mixture of elegant and rough unsavory characters that feel particularly true-to-life from what I’ve read on the subject. Even the technical parts about the various parts of the airship, This book is reminiscent of the best pirate adventures of the past, but ups the ante by setting half of the tale in the air, rather than the seas, and by taking time with characterizations, rather than creating stock Baddies.

All the exciting fiction I seem to be gy of late is, technically, aimed at kids. The airships, the characters, pirates, mythical beasts come to life, skeptical scientists, daring girls, snooty chaperones, brave captains, vivacious cooks, and a daring, brave, excelling cabin boy.


Also, Leviathan is loads better. I started out writing sci-fi epics my Star Wars phase then went on to swords and sorcery tales my Dungeons and Dragons phase and then, during the summer holiday when I was fourteen, started on a humorous story about a boy addicted to video games written, of course, during my video game phase. xirborn

But then that last little bit pretty much explains your whole book for me. It’s a marvelous thing.

But, there are obvious deaths, some of which might be unnerving for young, sensitive readers. And I wasn’t sure how I felt about her at the end.

While I agree some parts could have been made to sound more authentic in terms of setting and characters the book overall was very fulfilling. The more so because they feel authentic to the world of the story. Well worth a read if you like a good old-fashioned ripping yarn. Obviously, Matt is quite resentful of Bruce Lunardi, and he certainly has a right to it.

Although the idea of a poor boy versus rich girl has been used numerous times, these two do not bore. No bad language, a couple chaste kisses.

A routine trip changes when they find a balloon floating aimlessly across their shipping lane, with a man near-dead aboard. What’s the Name o Luckily, many opportunities arise for him to prove his mettle to the captain. Instead, it was a wonderful, well-paced combination of the two.

If one goes overboard while on a boat, there is an ocean to catch you… If one goes overboard while up thousands of feet in the air, the consequences are much more severe.

His gang of pirates plunder the ship of all valuables and kill the chief wireless officer. Thankfully, Matt and Kate do not require a ton of romance to keep the relationship interesting and enjoyable to read.

After luring the cloud cat into a clearing with a fish, the shutter of Kate’s camera provokes it into attacking. Add in class issues and an adventurous young lady with scientific aspirations and it more than fills pages. Aibrorn of the action takes place aboard airships, which are the only forms of air transport, since aeroplanes have not yet been invented.

Megan McMillen Sounds like someone is trying to cheat on their homework! While I like Matt quite a bit, I’m more curious to see what antics Kate has him getting up to in the next book.

But don’t make her so impossibly strong and perfect and unafraid, and always their one fault seems to be that they’re a bit headstrong.
