But this doesn’t feel like it has the layers and emotional complexity that the film has, and I wonder if he made bigger coubt than I realize in his adaptation. The fact that it doesn’t provide easy answers is a strength, not a weakness, and it stays true to its central, eponymous theme. The mother tells Sister Aloysius plainly that she is willing to put up with whatever attention Father Flynn gives, because it will only last until the school term is up.
She ignores Aloysius’s accusations. It is this climate that allowed many guilty priests to survive in parishes for so long, with so many lives destroyed. Learning this, Aloysius reveals to Sister James that the decisive phone call was a fabrication.
