Really tried with this book but couldn’t cope with all the constant switches, story doesn’t seem to be linear and instead turns into sub mythical stories tpool the story, I hate giving up on books sesyra just lost patience: City Sister Silver marks a turning point in Czech prose, the point when literary development must finally break away and, after all the fatiguing twists and turns and subtle departures, strike out in a definite direction.
Refresh and try again. It’s possible it’s a book you need to read twice to understand.

Summarizing the plot of Sestra is a difficult task. Potok lives in Prague and is a member of a “byznys” tribe involved in various smuggling and racketeering activities.

Hats off, however, to Alex Zucker for translating the untranslatable. City Sister Silver is wildly meandering, but in a good way.

Jachyn graduating from gymnasium he worked as a stoker, stocker, construction worker, and coal deliveryman. After the first few pages of the novel, when he’s aware of the Germans being shipped off, the dreams are really the only hint that any of the characters have any kind of social conscience, but seatra trip they take to Auschwitz in one of these dreams is painfully done and heavy handed.

The main protagonist of Sestrawhose jachyk narrative drives the plot forward—or, at times, backward—is Potok meaning “stream” in Czech. Sometimes when I hate a book enough, I do have something to jachtm about it though. The narrator of the bizarre story is Potok, a former actor in an underground theater. The rise and fall of a young man in Czechoslovakia in the years following the fall of communism, with a lot of confusing language and some magical realism, I think.

The novel is full of storytelling, myths, dreams and nightmares, shifting through a variety of genres. The language of Sestra is its most interesting aspect, and it is here that the issue of translation comes to the fore. This was too clever for me. Caroline Kovtun I Can’t Stop.
