What sad about it is that death and murder are all too horrid but all too easy going. I like the West Yorkshire moorland setting – I’m from East I may just give it another go around in the original English language It was a nicely written mystery mixed in with romance and friendship.
I adored Victoria Holt as a teen, but haven’t read any of her work in nearly 30 years. Why can’t they ALL be this good? Of the one ‘bad’ decision she made, I wouldn’t call it stupidness, only really bad timing, as it brought her into peril.

Status, wealth and family in the end. I never tire of reading her work even though the plot is generally very similar. She didn’t fully trust Simon but she realized she didn’t have a choice.
Detailed Review Summary of Kirkland Revels by Victoria Holt
While not as good as Mistress of Mellyn, this novel was a success! I absolutely loved them at the time. Like romances, it has the familiar patterns. I really liked Gabriel and Friday and I wished he had a bigger part. Devels used to devour Holt, and still have several in storage.
I really enjoyed it. It was good though. His family, his father, his older sister and her son- the alternate heir to the Revels, a half daft aunt with prophetic visions, an arrogant cousin- Simon, do not wholly welcome her, and there is more to explain in Gabriel’s sudden fears and sullen evasions and, a week later, his “”suicide — exactly like the others””.
